We’ve been all over the place.

We’ve been all over the place at Spitting Pig Sussex over the past few weeks, but I thought I’d treat you all to a little description of a party we catered in Pyecombe last week for a local farmer and his family. It was a reunion the like of which you don’t often see – the host was one of seven brothers and sisters, and it was the first time they’d all been in the same place for ten years. With kids in tow and various grandparents, great aunts and uncles, cousins and old family friends making up the numbers they were a right motley crew, and there were a fair few tears as people who hadn’t seen each other since the last millennium reacquainted themselves. I’m pretty sure I saw a few tears of joy when the guests got their hands on the food as well – freshly prepared on site and on the day by Spitting Pig Sussex, it went down a treat I can tell you. We were set up in a field just at the bottom of Wolstonbury Hill, looking glorious as the sun went down and the torches around the field were lit up, and our Spitting Pig machines looked pretty glorious too. The guests had come from far and wide – one branch of the family was living in the Middle East, and others had travelled from the USA – and I think I can safely say even without the reunion the spread we put on would have made their trips worthwhile. If you come to Pyecombe when Spitting Pig Essex are in town, you’re in for the meal of a lifetime. My favourite moment was when one of the kids who’d been standing watching us cook asked what we were doing. I told him we were spit roasting a hog and briefly explained the process to him, and he looked at me incredulously. ‘That’s pork?’ he asked – it took me a moment to realise that he’d only ever seen pork cut up in trays in the butchers or the supermarket, and he was too young to make the connection between a pig and the meat on his plate. I served him a child sized hot pork sandwich with a good slab of stuffing and some gravy, which immediately dripped down his shirt, but I don’t think he minded – in fact, he looked pretty pleased with himself munching on a Spitting Pig Sussex hot pork roll! Get I’m while they’re young, I always say – I think we converted a new roast pork devotee, and he’ll be hunting out the hog roast for the rest of his life!
